July 21 – Perfect Code Film Feature #21
Today’s highlighted film is Captains Courageous from 1937. This is the story of a spoiled boy who falls off a luxury liner and is rescued by a fleet of local fishermen. Before the selfish youth can be returned to his wealthy father, he learns to be a hard worker as part of the crew, taught by the firm captain and the Portuguese fisherman who becomes his best friend. This film stars Freddie Bartholomew, Spencer Tracy, and Lionel Barrymore. It was directed by Victor Fleming, produced by Louis D. Lighton, and released by MGM. This is a perfect Code film because it teaches the importance of working hard and being part of a selfless team while presenting a dramatic, intense story with restraint and delicacy. I like this movie because of the amazing transformation which takes place in the young lad played by Freddie Bartholomew, brilliantly depicted by the prodigious actor. My favorite thing about it is the sensational cast and the way they interact in the very realistic realm of the fishing ship.
