Upcoming Blogathons!

 

I haven’t been participating in many blogathons recently. The summer months were largely occupied by PEPS’s month-long celebrations, #CleanMovieMonth and #AMonthWithoutTheCode. However, autumn has now arrived, and I have several blogathons on the calendar. We are joining the blogathon world in full force by hosting two of our own this fall! However, there are a lot of unique, fascinating, and clever blogathons which are being hosted by our comrades, many of which were too interesting to skip. The following are the blogathons in which I will participating in the next few months.

Firstly, I am participating in MovieRob’s Genre Grandeur for October. The topic for the month, which was chosen by Darren of Movie Reviews 101, is zombies. The genre’s interpretation is very loose, so I am taking a rather broad view of the topic. Instead of writing about a film which features “the undead deceased,” I am writing about a picture which features “the lifeless living.” I am going to write about Rasputin and the Empress from 1932. Although this is not your average zombie film, I believe that it qualifies because Alexis, the young prince, is hypnotized by the wicked Rasputin. While the boy is under his spell for most of the movie, he acts like a zombie, since his mind is controlled by the evil charlatan. I first watched and reviewed this film for the Barrymore Blogathon this summer. However, I will use a different approach to it in this article. Since we are hosting The Second Annual Great Breening Blogathon in October, I am going to post this article as part of it. Thus, I am going to breen it. Instead of discussing the synopsis, the history, and the casting, I am just going to focus on breening and zombies!

Secondly, I am going to participate in the 100 Years of Rita Hayworth Blogathon at Love Letters to Old Hollywood. I am joining this celebration of the lovely Hollywood actress and dancer with an article about one of her early films, Music in My Heart from 1940. Michaela is hosting this birthday celebration on October 17 through October 19. Although this blogathon begins the day our blogathon ends, I just had to join!

Next, I joined a blogathon which will be hosted that weekend by No Nonsense with Nuwan Sen. The October Birthdayz Blogathon takes place on October 20-22. This blogathon is a very unique one, honoring Hollywood people born in October. Naturally, I had to join with an article about Joseph Breen! Just a blogathon isn’t enough to celebrate our great mentor’s 130th birthday this year. Although I will be writing a special tribute article for his birthday as part of The Second Annual Breening Blogathon, I will focus on his birthday for this blogathon, too. For the Birthdayz Blogathon, I am going to focus on the fact that he was born on the same day that the oldest existing motion picture, The Roundhay Garden Scene, was filmed. Since Mr. Breen was so influential in the motion picture industry, I think that is an interesting connection! This blogathon is being hosted a week after his birthday, but I may post my article a week early as part of our blogathon.

On October 24, The 2nd Disability in Film Blogathon begins. It is being hosted by Pop Culture Reverie and In the Good Old Days of Classic Hollywood. This unusual blogathon pays homage to an often-ignored element of films, motion pictures dealing with disabilities. I consider it to be a very novel and worthy topic, so I decided to join. My topic of choice is The River from 1951. This film qualifies because the leading man, Captain John, is a war veteran who lost his right leg. He goes to India to stay with his cousin, another veteran who lost one of his eyes in battle+. I think that this film is very pertinent for this blogathon because the actor who played Captain John was a young World War II veteran who really lost his right leg in combat. This actor was Thomas Breen, the youngest son of Joseph I. Breen. He was a brave young marine who came back to civilian life after the war and became an actor! His role in The River was his only leading role, but it showed the depth of his talent and his ability to rise above his injury.

On November 16-18, Moon in Gemini is hosting The Greatest Film I’ve Never Seen Blogathon. This blogathon is an opportunity for writers to discover great or famous films which they have never seen. It is a chance to watch, experience, and review these movies which we somehow have missed for years. You don’t have to watch and love the film; you just have to watch it! I am joining this blogathon with a review of Gone with the Wind from 1939, David O. Selznick’s iconic Southern drama. A little while ago, I decided to watch it, since I had heard so much about it but hadn’t seen it. Now, I am finally going to review it!

That same weekend, The Rock Hudson Blogathon begins on the 17 and ends on the 19. In the Good Old Days of Classic Hollywood and Love Letters to Old Hollywood are hosting this celebration of the famous leading man of the 1950s and 60s. I am joining the celebration with an article about one of his only Breen Era films, Has Anybody Seen My Gal? from 1952. This snappy comedy set in the 1920s was in a box collection of Rock Hudson films. I liked it, so I decided to join the festivities with a review of it.

On November 19, my good friend Paul Smith of Pfeiffer Pfilms and Meg Movies is hosting The Meg Ryan Birthday Blogathon. I wanted to support him in his blogathon endeavor, but I didn’t know if I could, since I haven’t seen any movies with Meg Ryan. As a total abstainer from Rating Era films, I wasn’t planning on watching a movie from the 1980s or beyond any time soon. However, after doing more research about Miss Ryan’s career, I realized that she has been in a lot of films which were remakes of classic films from the Breen Era. Thus, I decided that I could write an article discussing these films and mentioning changes in the stories. I think it will be quite enjoyable!

So far, I have only joined one blogathon for December. That blogathon is The Unexpected Blogathon, hosted by Taking Up Room. It is taking place on December 7-9. In this blogathon, participants are encouraged to write about films to which they had an unexpected reaction. That reaction can be either positive or negative. It simply must be a film which surprised you in some way. This sounded very interesting to me, so I decided to join. After some thought, I chose Pocketful of Miracles from 1961 as my topic. This was the first and only Frank Capra film from the Shurlock Era that I have ever seen. When I watched it in August, I was very surprised by many aspects of this film. Naturally, I will go into more details in my article, but I am looking forward to this blogathon!
